The 2017 SHUKC scoreboard is brought to you by Gorilla Exteriors Contracting.  The only contender for roofing and exterior home improvement needs.

I tend to draw to games where I have two of my teams playing each other.  Sumner Academy and Harmon have opened their seasons against each other the past few seasons.  Friday night was no different and neither was the result.  TaVaughn Sappington made a huge statement on the ground and on defense with well over 200 yards and 2 TD’s.  He was also running the show at safety for the Sabres as well getting a INT in the second half.  Nahshon Houston had a rushing TD and a momentum shifting kickoff return for TD.  All this in route to the 28-8 win for the Sabres.  SHUKC Photos

Tonganoxie hit the road to help open up the new stadium at Spring Hill.  I am going to have a close eye on the Chieftains this year because this may be the best quality win for the SHUKC area this week.  Mason Beach is back and went 16 of 33 for 231 yards 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s.  Justin Hand rushed 15 times for 59 yards and a TD.  Junior Korbin Riedel had the bulk of the carries going 23 for 69 yards.  Beach hit 8 different players for completions Mac Thompson caught 4 for 78 yards and a TD.  Couple that with a LeeRoi Johnson sack and you

TaVaughn Sappington (Sumner Academy)

get a 23-14 win on the road.  (Props to the staff for posting stats)

Basehor-Linwood all but delivered the death blow to the Bishop Ward Cyclones season in week 1.  44-0 after 1 quarter and 72-0 for the game.  There just isn’t much to say here.  Marlon McDaniel had 11 carries for 95 yards and 2 TD’s to lead the Bobcats.  Philip Perez rushed for 3 TD’s.  Joey Foster with 9 tackles, Jace Friesen with 8 tackles and 3 TFL  (Props to the staff for posting stats)

Bonner Springs blasted Turner 56-0.  Congrats to Coach Eaddy on his first win as head coach of the Braves.  Noah Villarreal who played JV last year, shined bright going 14 of 22 for 167 yards and 3 TD’s.  The Braves unleashed an aerial attack as 4 Braves caught TD passes.  Caden Henley led the receivers with 4 catches 63 yards and 2 TD’s.  Happy to see Jamison Jackson back on the field with 4 catches 34 yards and a TD.  Bryant Stimac posted 5 tackles, 3 TFL and 2 sacks.  Andrew Puckett with 8 tackles to lead the team.  We won’t get too excited here but certainly a statement for the Braves.  (Props to the staff for posting stats)

The Schlagle Stallions opened on the road at Southeast Saturday afternoon.  Ivan Webb took the first scrimmage play of the game 80 yards for a TD and he may still be running.  He posted 30 carries for 345 yards and 2 TD’s week 1.  Larmon Witt with 2 long TD receiving plays provided punch they needed through the air.  The defense was high risk and high reward as normal with Schlagle.  38-12 was the final.  SHUKC Photos

Despite 238 yards rushing and 3 TD’s the Piper Pirates could not keep up with Paola falling 35-21.  Terrance Collins II burst onto the scene with 13 carries 116 yards and 2 TD’s.  First year starting QB Dalton White had 10 carries for 133 yards and a TD.  The TD was a 90+ yard run.

Lansing played crosstown rival Leavenworth and fell 13-6.

Wyandotte took the trip to Louisburg and got beat 41-14.

Washington traveled to Silver Lake (3A) and got beat 81-14.  Scott Strenk has to be questioning the scheduling of a 3A powerhouse in the state in his opening game of the season.

Mill Valley opened the new season off with a rough loss to St. James Academy 45-21.  The Jags turned the ball over 7 times as many new faces get used to the pressure of Friday night lights.  St. James Academy has been a good team year to year and obviously you can’t give away that many possessions against them.  I am sure this will serve as a wake up call for the defending state champs.

Atchison Redmen lost to Holton 45-14.
