Jaguar Defense Holds Off St. James

Mill Valley has secured its second straight trip to the sub state final in 5A with a defensive stand off with St. James Academy.  Joel Donn collected 12 more tackles to bring his yearly total to 152 on the season.  Donn provides a strong layer of stability in the back of the Jaguar defense but also is able to quickly diagnose and make plays against the run.  Donn’s name was called over and over Friday night during the game and has him fresh in my mind for a SHUKC defensive POY candidacy.  The Jaguars had at least 3 times in the 4th quarter that they turned the ball over on downs.

The offense has completely shifted to a grind it out running attack the last several weeks of the season.  Flaming only completed 36% of his throws for 98 yards but was able to make some timely runs.  His 98 yards along with sophomore sensation Cameron Young was enough to win 28-14.

Young is not a big kid but shows very good vision and a quick and decisive step into the holes being opened up by the line.  He now has 1402 yards and 13 TD’s for the Jaguars and has played as big a role as any in propelling the Jaguars into this showdown with Aquinas.  Now 7 straight games with 140+ yards.  Friday he collected 151 on the ground including the game winning TD late in the game.

Young coincidentally burst onto the scene against Aquinas with 191 yards and 2 TD’s.  The Jaguars lost that shoot out 40-33 but will look to get revenge Friday night.

This has been a nice rivalry built now between Aquinas and Mill Valley.  The 2013 Jaguars secured Joel Applebee’s first playoff win against Aquinas.  Last years teams defeated Aquinas twice on its way to a state championship.  Aquinas got the regular season win this year but I am sure a playoff win would be a lot sweater for the Jaguars.

Props to Joel Applebee who pushed his career record at Mill Valley to 47-18 with a state championship and now another trip to the sub state final.  He is really starting to see the fruit of his labor pay off.  He has one of the best youth programs in the state and it is starting to blossom with a solid overall program.

Good luck Friday against Aquinas!
