Jalen Taylor (Piper)

by David Brox, davidbrox@shukc.com

January is done and we are far enough into the season that players start to separate themselves a bit in conversations related to our SHUKC awards.  At the end of each year we name our top 10 players based on performance along with our player of the year.  Yesterday and now today we are starting to see those game changers step up to the plate.

Demarco Smith playing on back to back nights posted his second 20 and 10 night in a row.  Last night Smith went for 26 and 10 leading the Wildcats to a 71-60 win on the road against Shawnee Mission South.  For all the talk of Washington being vulnerable here they sit with a very strong strength of schedule and a 7-4 record.

Jalen Taylor led Piper to a rare 50-48 win over Basehor-Linwood.  Taylor has been very consistent posting his 7th double double last night.  With last nights performance of 16 points and 14 rebounds he will be right on the rebounding number to average a double double.  His effectiveness has lead Piper to a 11-2 record and in control of their own fate in winning the KVL for the first time in a long time.

Harmon defeated Atchison 73-70.  Gio Martinez with 21 points, BJ Heard with 12, Charles Harris with 12 and Braylan Johnson 11.  Taye Helms had 22 for Atchison who fell a bit short in their 4th quarter rally.  Big road win for Harmon.

Girls:

Piper defeated Basehor-Linwood 50-44.  Miya Ford with 14 to lead Piper. Libby Stallbaumer with 16 for Basehor.

Atchison defeats Harmon 70-18.

Bishop Ward defeated Bonner Springs 59-30
