Sumner Academy hosts Special Olympics



Kansas Unified Sports League


WHAT:       Unified Basketball League Matches among 13 area high schools and middle schools. School teams are made up of approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics students and students without intellectual disabilities (called Partners) who practice and compete on the same team.

WHO:         Special Olympics Kansas in partnership with Sumner Academy to host competitions for school teams of peers with and without intellectual disabilities, who practice together over an 8-week season.

WHERE:     Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences; 1610 N. 8th Street, Kansas City, Kansas 66101.

WHEN:       Sunday, October 16, 2016 starting at 12:00 pm.

WHY:         Unified Sports decreases bullying, discrimination and social exclusion, and increases opportunities for meaningful involvement in schools and communities, especially for students with intellectual disabilities. All students need the opportunity to play and learn together while forming bonds that tear down social barriers and stigmas.

HOW:         The Unified Champion Schools initiative is sponsored Special Olympics Kansas with assistance from the U.S. Department of Education. This competition is also made possible with continued support and generosity of the KCK Public Schools and partnering school districts.
